Edinburgh Castle, on its ancient volcanic rock above Scotland's capital, sits at the heart of House of Stewart history in a way no other building quite does. Robert II became Scotland's first Stewart monarch in 1371, tracing his right to the throne through his mother Marjorie Bruce, daughter of Robert the Bruce, and for the two and a half centuries that followed, Edinburgh Castle was central to how his dynasty administered and defended their kingdom. Mary Queen of Scots, the last Stewart ruler to be born in Scotland, gave birth to the future James VI within these walls in 1566, the child who would eventually unite the Scottish and English crowns. This print was captured by photographer Aly Wight.
If you carry the Stewart name, Edinburgh Castle is one of the places where your clan's story was genuinely made.
