What is the Clan Preston Connection to Craigmillar Castle?

Craigmillar Castle, located to the south-east of Edinburgh, is a magnificent ruin with a rich history tied to Clan Preston. The name Preston originates from 'priest's town,' and the clan held the lands and barony of Preston, later known as Craigmillar, from 1374.

The Prestons built a new castle on the site of an old stronghold, creating a large L-plan keep within two walled courtyards. The castle's strategic location and strong fortifications made it a significant stronghold in Scottish history. It played host to various notable figures, including James V, who sought refuge from disease in Edinburgh, and Mary, Queen of Scots, who often used Craigmillar as a retreat.

One of the castle's most intriguing stories involves the imprisonment of John, Earl of Mar, by James III in one of its cellars, where John met his tragic end. The castle also became a place of conspiracy, where plots were hatched, including the reputed planning of Lord Darnley's murder.

Sir Simon Preston of Craigmillar, a prominent figure in Clan Preston, served as Lord Provost of Edinburgh three times and played a significant role in the city's governance.

Craigmillar Castle's connection to Clan Preston and its place in Scottish history make it a fascinating site, filled with stories of power, intrigue, and royal connections.

If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Preston or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Craigmillar Castle provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
