Photographer Aly Wight took this aerial photograph of Eilean Donan Castle, where the waters of three sea lochs meet on the Highland road to Skye. In 1306, while Robert the Bruce was fighting to secure his claim to the Scottish throne, he is said to have sheltered at Eilean Donan under the protection of the Mackenzies of Kintail. It was more than a refuge. It was a signal of where power in the Highlands was beginning to concentrate. Over the following three centuries the Mackenzies grew into one of the most powerful clans in Scotland, and Eilean Donan remained at the centre of their world.
If you carry the Mackenzie name, Eilean Donan is where the story of that rise begins.
