Photographer Aly Wight took this photograph of Castle Leod, a tower house a few miles from Dingwall in the Scottish Highlands, built by Sir Roderick Mackenzie of Coigach around 1610. The name was Roderick's own choice, a deliberate nod to the clan's connection with the MacLeods of Lewis. His descendants were raised to the Earldom of Cromartie in 1703, and Castle Leod became their chief seat. More than four centuries on, it still is. While most clan castles changed hands through war, debt, or political forfeit over the centuries, Castle Leod has remained in Mackenzie hands from the day it was built.
If you carry the Mackenzie name, Castle Leod is rare proof of what continuity looks like.
