What is the Clan Buchanan Connection to Clairinsh?
The Island of Clairinsh is a small, uninhabited island located in the northern part of Loch Lomond. Oak trees and ivy dominate the island and, viewed from above, it resembles a fish shape. The island has a rich history and is closely connected to Clan Buchanan, one of the oldest Scottish clans. It was at one time the seat of Clan Buchanan, who adopted "Clà r-Innis!" as their battle cry.
Clairinsh was the first territory under the ownership of the Buchanan Chiefs in the early 12th century and so it became known as the "Heart of the Clan."
The island also played a role in the Jacobite uprisings of the 18th century. It was used as a hiding place by James MacGregor, a member of Clan Gregor who was a supporter of the deposed King James VII of Scotland. MacGregor was eventually captured and executed for his role in the uprising.
If you are considering a landscape photograph of Scotland that celebrates your connection to Clan Buchanan, this print of Clairinsh provides a stunning aerial view that takes in the glorious beauty of Loch Lomond. Clairinsh is an important symbol and central to the story of Clan Buchanan.
Where is Clairinsh?
