The Vennel is one of Edinburgh's oldest surviving closes, a stepped alleyway in the city's Old Town that runs up through what remains of the Flodden Wall, built in the aftermath of the 1513 Battle of Flodden where so many Stewart noblemen were killed. From this vantage point, Edinburgh Castle is visible as it has been for centuries, a fortress at the heart of Stewart royal power from Robert II (Scotland's first Stewart king, crowned in 1371) to James VI, who was born within its walls in 1566. One of the castle's darker moments came in the Lang Siege of 1571 to 1573, when supporters of the imprisoned Mary Queen of Scots held it against the regent's forces for nearly two years before surrendering. This photograph was captured by photographer Aly Wight.

If the Stewart name runs through your family history, the fortress in this print was one of the places where your clan's story was written.
