Photographer Aly Wight took this photograph of Tantallon Castle on the East Lothian coast near North Berwick, the clifftop fortress that served as the seat of the Red Douglases for over three centuries. William Douglas built it around 1350, and it became the stronghold of the Earls of Angus, one of medieval Scotland's most powerful families. The massive curtain wall cuts across the headland, with a ditch protecting the only landward approach. King James V tried and failed to take it in 1528. Over a century later, Cromwell's forces pounded the walls for twelve days before the garrison surrendered.
If you carry the Douglas name, this is the kind of place that shaped your clan's story. A fortress that took two of history's most determined armies to bring down.
