Photographer Aly Wight photographed Inveraray Castle on a still autumn morning, shooting across the ornamental water in the grounds where the castle's towers and turrets are perfectly reflected in the dark, glassy surface below. A large moss-covered oak fills the left of the frame, its bare branches reaching over the water, and the grass and trees show the copper and gold of the season throughout. When the Campbells outgrew their original island fortress on Loch Awe in the fifteenth century, Inveraray became the clan's new centre of power. The present building was constructed from 1743. James V visited the earlier castle in 1533, Mary Queen of Scots came in 1563, and generations of Campbell earls and dukes shaped Scottish politics from this seat on the shores of Loch Fyne. The family still lives at Inveraray today, making it one of the longest continually held clan seats in the Highlands.
If you carry the Campbell name, Inveraray is the heart of the clan's story, and it remains so to this day.
