Achnacarry, in the hills of Lochaber about nine miles north-east of Fort William, has been the home of the Cameron chiefs since the 17th century, when the clan moved here from the earlier stronghold at Tor Castle. The most devastating episode in the estate's history came in the aftermath of Culloden in 1746, when the forces of the Duke of Cumberland burned the chief's house as part of the sweeping punishment meted out to clans who had supported Bonnie Prince Charlie's Jacobite uprising against the Hanoverian crown. Donald Cameron, known as the gentle Lochiel, had been reluctant to commit his clan, and historians have noted that the uprising might never have gathered momentum without him. The estate was returned to the Cameron family in 1784, and the house that stands at Achnacarry today was begun around 1802. This photograph was captured by photographer Aly Wight.
If you carry the Cameron name, Achnacarry is the clan's heartland, the place the chiefs have called home for over three hundred years.
