What is the Clan Stewart Connection to Stirling Castle?

The Stewarts were a powerful family, their roots deeply embedded in Scottish history as High Stewards of Scotland. Their rise to royal status began with Robert II, who became King of Scotland in the late 14th century, founding the House of Stewart.

Stirling Castle, perched atop Castle Hill and surrounded by steep cliffs, was a stronghold of immense strategic importance. The Stewarts took control of this fortress, which was often described as the 'Gateway to the Highlands,' during their reign. James IV, a Stewart king, was particularly fond of Stirling Castle and invested heavily in its fortifications.

The castle was the backdrop for significant events, including the coronation of Mary, Queen of Scots, a Stewart herself, in 1543.

Earlier in its existence it was also a military hub during the Wars of Scottish Independence, where key figures like William Wallace and Robert the Bruce played pivotal roles.

The castle's remarkable design and deep-rooted history make it an ideal subject for this landscape photography print, encapsulating a vital aspect of Scotland's rich past. Our print showcases the castle set against the striking backdrop of the Stuc a’Chroin and Ben Vorlich mountains. As the sun sets, its warm glow casts an extraordinary light on this age-old medieval wonder.

If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Stewart or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Stirling Castle provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
