Stirling Castle sits on a volcanic plug at the head of the Forth valley, where the Highlands and Lowlands meet, and for much of the 15th and 16th centuries it was the preferred home of the Stewart royal family. James II was born within these walls. James IV built the Great Hall that still stands on the upper ward today, and Mary Queen of Scots was crowned here as an infant in the castle chapel in 1543, nine months old and already queen of Scotland. Her son, the future James VI, was baptised at Stirling in 1566 in a ceremony said to have been so lavish that it consumed a significant portion of the Scottish court's annual budget. This print was captured by photographer Aly Wight.
If you carry the Stewart name, Stirling is as close as any castle gets to being the home of your royal line.
