Falkland Palace, in the Fife countryside north of Edinburgh, was the site of some of the most turbulent episodes in early Stewart history. In the early 15th century it was held by Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, the man who effectively governed Scotland while his ailing brother Robert III stepped back from public life. In 1402, David, Duke of Rothesay and heir to the throne, died at Falkland under circumstances that history has never fully explained, with Albany widely suspected. Albany's own son Murdoch was executed in 1425 when James I returned from English captivity and moved decisively against the Albany branch of the family. The palace later passed to the Crown and was transformed into a Renaissance building by James V in the 1530s. This photograph was captured by photographer Aly Wight.
If you carry the Stewart name, Falkland is a reminder that the family's story contained as much drama within its own ranks as it ever did with outside rivals.
