What is the Clan Stewart Connection to Doune Castle?

Doune Castle has strong connections to the history of Clan Stewart. Located near the village of Doune in Stirling, the castle was built in the 14th century by Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, the younger brother of King Robert III of Scotland. As one of the most powerful figures in Scottish politics during the 14th century, the Duke of Albany was a member of Clan Stewart and played a significant role in shaping Scottish history.

The castle was a favourite residence of the Scottish monarchs, including King James IV and his successor, King James V. It also served as a residence for other prominent Stewarts, including Queen Margaret Tudor. The Stewarts maintained control of the castle until the 16th century, when it was taken over by the Crown.

Doune Castle was also used as a military garrison during the Jacobite Uprising of 1745. Its strategic location and robust construction made it an essential stronghold during this turbulent period in Scottish history. The castle has also served as a filming location for many popular movies and TV shows, including Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Outlander, and Game of Thrones.

If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Stewart or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Doune Castle provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.

Where is Doune Castle?
