What is the Clan Stewart Connection to Castle Stuart?
Castle Stuart, situated six miles north-east of Inverness in the Scottish Highlands, is a tower house with a rich history. Though the land was once held by the Mackintoshes, it was transferred to James Stewart, Earl of Moray, in the mid-16th century. The existing structure, mostly dating from the early 17th century, was built upon older work, reflecting the complex history of the site.
The castle's construction was a prolonged process, with James Stewart, the third Earl of Moray, completing the current structure around 1625. During this time, the castle was briefly seized by the Mackintoshes in a dispute over ownership, but it was eventually restored to the Stewarts.
Strategically positioned near the Moray Firth, Castle Stuart played a significant role in the history of the Stewart clan. However, the castle fell into disuse during the turbulent times of the English Civil War and was abandoned and unroofed by 1835.
The castle's architecture, complete with turrets and towers, is a stunning example of the Scottish baronial style. Its tranquil surroundings and the legend of a haunted turret chamber add to its allure.
If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Stewart or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Castle Stuart provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
Where is Castle Stuart?
