What is the Clan Gordon Connection to Aboyne Castle?

Aboyne Castle, nestled in the Scottish landscape, has a fascinating history that spans centuries. Originally owned by the Bissets in the 13th century, it later passed to the Knights Templar and the Keiths. In the early 15th century, the Gordons of Huntly acquired the castle, marking the beginning of a long and significant connection with Clan Gordon.

One tragic chapter in the castle's history occurred in the 17th century when John Gordon, Lord Aboyne, and several family members died in a fire at another castle. Despite this loss, the Gordons' connection to Aboyne Castle continued to thrive. Key family members were honored with titles, such as Viscount Aboyne in 1632 and Earl of Aboyne in 1660.

The castle's history also includes a brief capture by the Covenanters during Scotland's turbulent 17th century. The Gordons, however, regained control and have reportedly maintained ownership to this day.

If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to connect with Clan Gordon, this print of Aboyne Castle provides a beautiful immersive view that transports you to the past.

Where is Aboyne Castle?
