What is the Clan Gordon Connection to Fyvie Castle?

Fyvie Castle was originally a royal stronghold, serving the needs of the Scottish monarchy from the 13th to the later 14th centuries. It passed through the hands of the Preston, Meldrum, and Seton families before being acquired by the Gordons in 1733, who then led a series of landscaping projects to transform the grounds around the castle.

The Gordons were one of the most powerful and influential families in Scotland, with close ties to the monarchy. They played an important role in Scottish history, particularly during the turbulent times of the Scottish Reformation and the Jacobite rebellions.

Fyvie Castle was the site of conflict and uncertainty during the mid to late 17th century. Most notably, in October 1644, the depleted forces of James Graham, Marquis of Montrose, held their ground against the Earl of Argyll's Covenanters. The estate was forfeited in 1690 and reverted to Crown ownership before being acquired by the Gordon family.

Fyvie Castle and its grounds underwent radical changes in the 18th century when the Hon. William Gordon of Fyvie invested a considerable sum in drainage projects, park creation, and landscaping. Alexander Forbes-Leith later transformed the castle into a lavish home and venue for distinguished guests.

If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a gift or a way to visualize your ancestral connection to Clan Gordon, this print of Fyvie Castle provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
