Photographer Aly Wight took this photograph of Fyvie Castle, a grand castle in Aberdeenshire that passed into Gordon hands in 1733 when it became the seat of the Gordon Earls of Aberdeen. The Gordons had long been the dominant family in north-east Scotland, and this branch held Fyvie for over 150 years. By the mid-eighteenth century they were wealthy enough to commission the most fashionable portrait painters in Europe. Colonel William Gordon of Fyvie had his portrait painted in Rome in 1766 by Pompeo Batoni, the Italian artist who captured practically every wealthy young Briton making their Grand Tour of the continent. His descendant George Gordon, fourth Earl of Aberdeen, became Prime Minister of Britain in 1852.
If you carry the Gordon name, Fyvie is the story of a clan that turned its dominance in the north into something that reached all the way to Westminster.
