What is the Clan Keith Connection to Dunnottar Castle?

Dunnottar Castle, dramatically perched on a rocky headland on the northeastern coast of Scotland, is a site of significant historical importance and a symbol of Clan Keith's power and influence. The castle's ruins, spread over 3.5 acres, are surrounded by steep cliffs that plunge into the North Sea, creating a striking and formidable landscape.

The castle, believed to have been fortified in the Early Middle Ages, became the stronghold of Clan Keith in the 14th century. The Keiths, as the Great Marischals of Scotland, held a prestigious position in Scottish society. The castle's surviving buildings, mainly from the 15th and 16th centuries, include the 14th-century tower house and the 16th-century palace, reflecting the Keiths' architectural contributions.

One of the most notable events in the castle's history occurred in the 17th century, during the invasion of Oliver Cromwell's army. The Keiths, entrusted with the safety of the Honours of Scotland - the Scottish Crown Jewels - hid them within the castle's robust walls, successfully keeping them out of Cromwell's reach. This act further solidified the castle's and Clan Keith's importance in Scottish history.

The castle's strategic location and robust defences made it a key player in Scotland's tumultuous past, witnessing numerous sieges and battles. The castle's connection to Clan Keith ended when George Keith, the 10th Earl Marischal, participated in the Jacobite Rebellion of 1715, leading to the forfeiture of his estates, including Dunnottar Castle.

If you're considering a landscape photography print of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Keith or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Dunnottar Castle provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
