Photographer Aly Wight took this photograph of Aboyne Castle, a Gordon stronghold on the River Dee in Aberdeenshire that the family had held since the early fifteenth century. In August 1715, as Scotland was gathering itself for the Jacobite rising, an attempt to put the Stuart dynasty back on the British throne, a large gathering took place at Aboyne under the cover of a hunt. The hunt was a fiction. What assembled there was a council of nobles quietly making plans for war. The Gordons, the dominant clan family of the north-east of Scotland, were at the heart of it.
If you carry the Gordon name, Aboyne is where that loyalty looked like a quiet afternoon in the countryside.
