Photographer Aly Wight took this photograph of Auchindoun Castle, a fifteenth-century tower on a hilltop above the Fiddich valley in Moray. The Gordons took possession of it in 1535, adding this commanding high ground to the network of strongholds that made them the most powerful family in north-east Scotland. They were known across the region as "Cock o' the North," a title that reflected the reach of their influence from Aberdeenshire into Moray and beyond. Auchindoun stood at the western edge of that world, a Gordon outpost watching over the glens that fed into their heartlands.
If you carry the Gordon name, Auchindoun stands at the edge of the world the Gordons built for themselves in the north of Scotland.
