Clan Cameron Connection

The site of Tor Castle, overlooking the banks of the River Lochy, was historically significant for Clan Cameron. What is the Clan Cameron Connection to Tor Castle?

The site of Tor Castle, resting on the banks of the River Lochy, has a rich history that spans back to the Iron Age when a fort stood here. Tradition holds that the fort once belonged to Banquo, a character featured in Shakespeare's "Macbeth." A castle has occupied this site since at least the 11th century, and the landscape, marked by the distinct "S" shape of the River Lochy and the backdrop of Ben Nevis and the Nevis Range Mountains, celebrates the rugged beauty of Scotland.

In 1291, Angus Mackintosh, chief of the Clan Mackintosh, married Eva, the only daughter of Dougal Dal, chief of the Clan Chattan. This union brought Angus the lands of Glenloy and Loch Arkaig, and they resided at Tor Castle before later withdrawing to Rothiemurchus.

The castle was then seized by the Clan Cameron, who constructed a massive tower house and courtyard. Ewen Cameron of Lochiel, the 13th chief of Clan Cameron, rebuilt the castle in 1530. Under the Camerons, the castle served as a refuge from attacks by the Clan MacDonald of Keppoch, and it became a symbol of their clan's resilience.

If you are considering a landscape photograph of Scotland that celebrates your connection to Clan Cameron, this print of the site of Tor Castle provides an aerial view that takes in the glorious beauty of Ben Nevis and the Nevis Range Mountains. The site of Tor Castle is an important symbol and central to the story of Clan Cameron.
