Loch Lochy runs through the Great Glen, the long geological fault that cuts Scotland roughly in two from the north-east coast to the Atlantic, and it sits at the heart of Lochaber, the district the Camerons have occupied since at least the early 15th century. The clan traces its recorded history to Donald Dubh, who united the local confederate tribes around 1410 and whose descendants would go on to become one of the most celebrated fighting families in the Highlands. After the Jacobite defeat at Culloden in 1746, the last battle fought on British soil, government troops burned the Cameron houses and drove off their livestock as part of the effort to dismantle Highland clan society. Achnacarry, the Cameron chiefs' home, stands close by the loch today. Photographer Aly Wight returned to the same country they once left behind.

If the Cameron name runs through your family, this is the water at the centre of your clan's story.
