Tor Castle stood for several centuries as the principal stronghold of Clan Cameron, three miles north-east of what is now Fort William in Lochaber, on ground where a fortification had existed since the 11th century. The Camerons seized the site from the Mackintoshes and built a massive tower house here, and by the 1490s the 13th chief, Ewan Cameron, was using it as his seat and was the first to take the title Cameron of Lochiel. The castle served as a refuge during the long territorial disputes with the MacDonalds of Keppoch, a neighbouring branch clan who repeatedly challenged the Camerons for land in the area. By the mid-17th century, the 17th chief, Sir Ewen Cameron, had moved the seat to Achnacarry, and Tor Castle was gradually left to the elements. Only the site remains today, a bend in the River Lochy below Ben Nevis, the highest mountain in Britain, and photographer Aly Wight has captured it's beauty from the air at sunrise.

If you carry the Cameron name, this is the ground where your clan chiefs held power for two hundred years.
