In 1307, a small boat came ashore near Lochranza on the northern tip of Arran, carrying Robert the Bruce back from Ireland. His campaign to reclaim the Scottish throne was about to begin. The castle that stands here, its towers reflected in the waters of the sea loch, watched over one of the most consequential landings in Scottish history.
Stewart lords are among those recorded at Lochranza across the medieval centuries, part of the clan's long reach through the Clyde islands and western coastlines before their story widened into something far larger: the royal houses of Scotland and England. The castle later passed to the Montgomerys and then the Hamiltons, but its place in history was already secured long before.
This landscape was photographed by photographer Aly Wight.
If you carry the Stewart or Stuart name, Lochranza connects you to a corner of Scotland where your clan's history and the birth of a nation share the same shoreline.
