What is the Clan Stewart Connection to Lochranza Castle?
Lochranza Castle, located on the Isle of Arran in Scotland, has a rich history dating back to the 13th century. Originally owned by the MacSweens, the castle was granted to Walter Bailloch Stewart, the Earl of Menteith, in 1262. Walter was a younger son of the 3rd High Steward of Scotland. The title of High Steward gave rise to the family name 'Stewart' and the line of High Stewards continued to play a prominent role in Scottish nobility. It was Walter's great-nephew, also named Walter Stewart, who married Marjorie Bruce, the daughter of Robert the Bruce. Their son, Robert II, ascended the throne in 1371, becoming the first king of the Stuart dynasty.
During the 1490s, James IV used Lochranza Castle in his campaign against the Lord of the Isles and the Clan MacDonald.
Lochranza Castle's picturesque setting and multifaceted history make it an appealing subject for this landscape photography print, capturing a key part of Scotland's heritage.
If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Stewart or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Lochranza Castle provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
Where is Lochranza Castle?
