What is the Clan Murray Connection to Blair Castle?

Blair Castle, situated in the breathtaking Highland scenery of Perthshire, Scotland, is a symbol of the enduring legacy of Clan Murray. This majestic fortress, with its whitewashed walls and turreted towers, has been closely tied to the Murrays since the 17th century.

The castle's history is interwoven with the Murrays' support for the Royalist cause during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. John Murray, created Earl of Atholl in 1629, began a lineage that continues to hold the title today. The castle was taken by Oliver Cromwell's army in 1650, but the restored Charles II later created the title Marquess of Atholl for John Murray, 2nd Earl of Atholl, and the title Duke of Atholl was granted in 1703.

During the Jacobite risings, a series of military campaigns aimed at restoring the Stuart kings to the thrones of Scotland and England, Blair Castle played a significant role. The Murrays' involvement was complex, with John Murray, the 1st Duke of Atholl, supporting the government, while his son, Lord George Murray, became a prominent Jacobite general. In 1746, the castle was besieged by Jacobite forces under Lord George Murray's command but held out until the arrival of government forces.

The castle's architectural beauty and strategic location controlling access through Strath Garry have made it one of Scotland's most iconic historic sites and a beacon to Clan Murray members all over the world.

If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Murray or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Blair Castle provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
