What is the Clan Murray Connection to Bothwell Castle?

Bothwell Castle, standing proudly in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, is a symbol of the historical legacy of the Morays, a branch of Clan Murray. The land was acquired by Walter of Moray's aristocratic family in 1242, and the construction of this vast castle began soon after, either by Walter or his son William, known as 'the Rich'. This mighty fortress, covering 1.5 acres, was a spectacular display of power and prestige.

During the Wars of Independence, Bothwell suffered several sieges, with Edward I's great siege of 1301 being the most significant. After the wars, Bothwell passed to the Black Douglases, who added fine quality architecture. The castle was seized by the Crown in 1455, and its history since then has been relatively uneventful.

The Morays' work on the castle included the donjon, one of medieval Scotland's greatest stone buildings, and much of the south curtain wall. The donjon, partially destroyed in 1337 and later rebuilt, remains a hugely impressive structure.

If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Murray or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Bothwell Castle provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
