What is the Clan Murray Connection to Huntingtower Castle?
Huntingtower Castle, located north-west of Perth, Scotland, is a remarkable structure consisting of two towers, one from the fifteenth century and the other from the sixteenth. Originally known as Ruthven Castle and held by the Clan Ruthven, the castle's history took a dramatic turn following the Gowrie Conspiracy in 1660, leading to the forfeiture of the property.
The castle then passed to William Murray, Earl of Dysart, and subsequently to the Murrays of Tullibardine, and then to the Murray Marquesses and Dukes of Atholl. The transition of ownership to the Murrays marked a significant chapter in the castle's history, intertwining it with the legacy of Clan Murray.
Huntingtower Castle was also the birthplace of the Jacobite Lord George Murray, a prominent figure in Scottish history. The castle's architectural beauty, combined with its rich history, makes it a fascinating symbol of Clan Murray's influence and heritage.
If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Murray or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Huntingtower Castle provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
