What is the Clan Murray Connection to Scone Palace?
Scone Palace, located just two miles north of Perth, Scotland, is a remarkable site with deep connections to Clan Murray. The current Gothic mansion, dating from 1802, incorporates parts of a house built by the Ruthvens in the 1580s, and possibly even older work from 1580. The Murrays, one of Scotland's great families, were granted Scone after the Gowrie Conspiracy in 1600, as Sir David Murray of Gospertie had saved the king's life during the conspiracy.
The Murrays were made Viscounts of Stormont in 1602 and Earls of Mansfield in 1776. Scone Palace was a significant residence for the clan, and its history is intertwined with the Jacobite risings of 1715 and 1745. The Old Pretender held court at Scone in 1715, and Bonnie Prince Charlie visited in 1745.
The Murrays have been soldiers, statesmen, ambassadors, and lawmakers, close to the heart of Scottish affairs for centuries. Their stewardship of Scone Palace is a testament to their influence and prominence in Scottish history and continues to this day, as it remains home to the Murray Earls of Mansfield.
If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Murray or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Scone Palace provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
