Knock Castle, also known by its Gaelic name Caisteal Camus, stands in ruins near Armadale on the southern shore of Skye, the island that has been at the heart of MacLeod territory for more than seven centuries. Records suggest the castle was held by the MacLeods in the 15th century before it passed to the MacDonalds, who were then their principal rivals for dominance across the western Highlands. In 1515, the MacLeod chief Alasdair Crotach, one of the most capable leaders the clan produced, besieged Knock Castle in an attempt to retake it, but the effort failed and it remained in MacDonald hands.
If you carry the MacLeod name, the southern shore of Skye is part of your clan’s story, a landscape long contested between the two great powers of the western Highlands. Photographer Aly Wight captured Knock Castle for the Clanscape collection of Scottish heritage prints.
