Photographer Aly Wight took this photograph of Dunvegan Castle on the shore of the loch that still bears its name, one of Scotland's longest continuously inhabited strongholds. The MacLeod chiefs have held Dunvegan since the late 1200s, when Leod, descended from Norse royalty, married into Skye's ruling household. The clan fought at the Battle of Harlaw in 1411 and lost over 500 men at Worcester in 1651. Through it all, Dunvegan remained their seat. It still is today.

If you carry the MacLeod name, Dunvegan is rare proof of what continuity looks like across eight centuries of Scottish history.
