The Black Cuillin is one of the most dramatic mountain ranges in the British Isles, a ridge of dark gabbro rock that rises sharply from the centre of the Isle of Skye. Skye has been the heartland of Clan MacLeod since the 13th century, when the first MacLeod chiefs settled at Dunvegan on the island’s northwest coast. Their territory stretched across the island and out into the surrounding sea, with the Cuillins forming the stark and distinctive skyline above their lands throughout all of that time.

If you carry the MacLeod name, these mountains are part of what your ancestors looked out on for centuries. Photographer Aly Wight captured the Cuillin Hills for the Clanscape collection of Scottish heritage prints.
