Clan Mackay - Moine House - Photo Print

Moine House stands in the heart of Clan Mackay country in Sutherland, set within one of Europe's great wild landscapes, the Flow Country, a vast expanse of blanket bog stretching across Caithness and Sutherland that has remained largely unchanged for thousands of years. The Mackays of Strathnaver held this territory through centuries of conflict with their neighbours, most persistently the Sutherland earls who pressed against them from the south. The high point of the clan's formal standing came in 1628, when Sir Donald Mackay was created first Lord Reay, though the Mackay lands were gradually absorbed by the Sutherland estate over the following two centuries, with the last of the ancestral territory passing to the Sutherlands in 1829.
