Balnakeil sits at the very tip of mainland Scotland, close to Cape Wrath where the Atlantic coastline turns to face north, in country the MacKays held as their own for centuries. The house has been associated with the MacKay chiefs since the early 17th century, a seat at the outermost edge of the territory they defended for generations against steady pressure from Clan Sutherland to the east. There may be no more remote MacKay seat than this one.
If the Mackay name is yours, this corner of Scotland was your people’s country. Photographer Aly Wight captured Balnakeil House for the Clanscape collection.
