What is the Clan Sinclair Connection to Old Keiss Castle?

Old Keiss Castle, perched on the edge of a cliff overlooking Sinclair's Bay in Caithness, Scotland, is a ruin with a rich history tied to Clan Sinclair. This castle, constructed in the late 16th century, was once a formidable fortress and part of the Sinclair family's vast estates.

The Sinclairs, originally from Normandy, became one of the most influential clans in northern Scotland. They settled in the region during the 12th century and played key roles in Scottish history, including supporting Robert the Bruce during the Wars of Scottish Independence.

Old Keiss Castle was built by George Sinclair, the 4th Earl of Caithness, and served as a stronghold for the Sinclairs for many years. Its coastal location allowed the clan to control the surrounding lands and waters, reflecting their maritime interests and power in the region.

The castle's history includes a notable event in 1698 when the Sinclair fleet set sail from Sinclair's Bay for the ill-fated Darien Scheme, an ambitious but unsuccessful Scottish colonial venture in Panama. The castle later fell into disrepair and was replaced by the nearby Keiss Castle.

Today, the ruins of Old Keiss Castle stand as a testament to the Sinclairs' enduring legacy in Caithness and continue to attract those interested in the clan's history and the rugged beauty of the Scottish coastline.

If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Sinclair or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Old Keiss Castle provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
