What is the Clan Gunn Connection to Dirlot Castle?

Dirlot Castle was a medieval stronghold located in Caithness, Scotland, constructed in the 14th century by Sir Reginald Cheyne. Although the castle was once an impressive structure, there is very little left to see now.

Despite its ruined state, Dirlot Castle remains a significant part of Clan Gunn's history and heritage. The castle was closely associated with the clan and occupied by them at different times throughout its history. Its location in the middle of a vast peat moorland and surrounded by flat and featureless land made it a potent symbol of power and authority, visible from miles around.

The castle was built on a plug of rock that rises vertically out of the River Thurso, with rocky precipices on all sides. From this aerial photograph, looking at the rock formation in the bottom left of the shot, you will only be able to see the base of some walls and foundations, which are now covered with grass. The natural defense of its position on the rock provides a glimpse into the practical and enterprising nature of medieval castle builders.

The walls of the nearby graveyard were laid out in the shape of an arrowhead, which was fitting given Dirlot's history and purpose. Although the castle was abandoned around 1660, its connection to the clan highlights its significance as a symbol of their power and influence in the region.

Looking at the site from this vantage point, you can still appreciate the castle's rich history and cultural significance. The stunning natural surroundings provide a glimpse into the landscape that would have been familiar to the Clan Gunn.

If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland, which celebrates your connection to Clan Gunn, this print of the site of Dirlot Castle provides a beautiful view that immerses you in an epic scene. The beauty of this unforgiving landscape make for a stunning photographic subject.
