Photographer Aly Wight took this photograph of Glen Strae, a narrow valley near Dalmally in Argyll that was the heart of the MacGregor world for three centuries. Glenstrae was the home of the MacGregor chiefs from the fourteenth century, the place where the clan had its roots while it still held land and standing in Scotland. That world unravelled over a long conflict with the Campbells, and in January 1604 the chief, Alasdair MacGregor of Glenstrae, was hanged at Edinburgh’s Mercat Cross along with eleven of his chieftains. Within a decade, the castle itself was burned by Campbell forces. The seat of the clan was gone.

If you carry the MacGregor name, Glenstrae is where the roots of your clan’s story go deepest.

Sizing Information

Glenstrae, once controlled by Clan MacGregor, encapsulates the drama and history of the clan. The MacGregors, known as the "Children of the Mist," were forced to retreat to Glenstrae when their lands were handed over to the Campbells.
