Photographer Aly Wight took this photograph of Kilchurn Castle, the fortress at the head of Loch Awe whose shadow fell directly over MacGregor territory for centuries. Robert the Bruce had granted the surrounding lands to the Campbells, who built Kilchurn and used it as a base to press the MacGregors back from the country around Loch Awe. Under that sustained pressure, the MacGregors were forced deeper and deeper into their remaining glens until they were largely confined to Glenstrae, then proscribed altogether. Kilchurn was the instrument of that pressure, and the MacGregor connection to this corner of Argyll goes back centuries before the castle was ever built.

If you carry the MacGregor name, Kilchurn tells you something about what your clan was pushed to give up.
