Sgùrr nan Gillean, whose Gaelic name means “Peak of the Young Men”, is one of the most dramatic summits in the Black Cuillin, the jagged mountain ridge that rises from the centre of the Isle of Skye. The glen beneath it is cut by the Allt Dearg, meaning the Red Stream in Gaelic, and at the foot of the ridge sits Allt Dearg Cottage, a small historic building in one of the most striking corners of the island. The MacLeods held Skye and its surrounding lands from the 13th century, and these mountains formed the dramatic backdrop to their heartland for generations.

If the MacLeod name is yours, the peaks and glens of the Cuillin were part of what your ancestors called home. Photographer Aly Wight captured this landscape in the MacLeod heartland on Skye for the Clanscape collection.
