The Fairy Pools lie in Glen Brittle at the foot of the Black Cuillin on the Isle of Skye, a series of clear mountain pools fed by burns running off the rocky ridge above. Skye has been MacLeod territory since the 13th century, and the western side of the island, where Glen Brittle opens to the sea, sat firmly within the clan’s lands. The MacLeods are also associated with the Fairy Flag at Dunvegan Castle, a silk banner of great antiquity that tradition holds was gifted to the clan by the fairies of the island, making the name of this place part of a longer thread of folklore woven through MacLeod history on Skye.
