What is the Clan MacDonald of Sleat Connection to Knock Castle?

Knock Castle, also known as Caisteal Chamuis (Castle Camus), is situated on the eastern coast of the Isle of Skye, overlooking the beautiful Sound of Sleat. The strategic location of the castle allowed for control over the surrounding sea routes and protection of the clan's territory.

Knock Castle was originally built in the 14th century by the Clan MacLeod, who controlled much of the Isle of Skye and were rivals to the MacDonalds. However, the castle's ownership shifted multiple times between the two clans due to the tumultuous political landscape of the Scottish Highlands in the late medieval period. By the early 15th century, the MacDonalds emerged as the rulers of the Isle of Skye, with the MacDonalds of Sleat branch eventually gaining control of Knock Castle.

One famous story associated with Knock Castle revolves around the Green Lady or Glaistig. The ghost will appear happy if good news is to come but if there is bad news she will weep. The castle is also reported to have had a gruagach, a spirit which is said to care for the livestock.

Knock Castle stands as a testament to the complex power struggles between the Highland clans and their shifting alliances. Today, the castle lies in ruins, but it continues to represent the deep-rooted history of the Isle of Skye and the enduring legacy of Clan MacDonald of Sleat. The Green Lady's legend adds an air of mystique to the castle, connecting it to the rich folklore of the Scottish Highlands.

If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan MacDonald of Sleat or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Knock Castle on the Isle of Skye provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
