Finlaggan on the Isle of Islay was the seat and governing centre of the MacDonald Lords of the Isles from around 1330 until 1493, when King James IV stripped the Lordship of its independence and absorbed its lands into the Scottish crown. At the height of their power in the 14th century, the Lords governed a realm that stretched across the Hebrides and much of the western Highlands, and at Finlaggan they convened their council on a second island in the loch with a formality unusual for the period. Angus Og MacDonald, whose grandson would become the first Lord of the Isles, died at Finlaggan in 1328, and the site had been a centre of power in the western isles for centuries before the castle was built. Photographer Aly Wight captured the loch and its islands as they stand today.
If you carry the MacDonald name, Finlaggan is where your clan's most remarkable chapter had its heart.
