What is the Clan Fraser of Lovat Connection to Beaufort Castle?

Clan Fraser of Lovat is a Highland Scottish clan and are strongly associated with Inverness and the surrounding area since the Clan's founder gained lands there in the 13th century. They are not to be confused with Clan Fraser, who were a powerful lowland family, both clans have their own separate clan chiefs.

Beaufort Castle, situated southwest of Beauly, is a historical mansion with deep roots in the history of Clan Fraser of Lovat. It was also known as Castle Dounie due to its location on a hill overlooking the River Beauly, near the village of Dounie. The castle replaced an older fortress that came to the Frasers in the 13th century and was later besieged by the English in 1303.

The castle was captured by Cromwell in 1650 because of its strategic importance. It also played a role in the Jacobite Rising of 1745 when Simon, Lord Lovat, supported Bonnie Prince Charlie. However, Simon was condemned to death in 1747, and the family lost the castle after being forfeited. Despite this, Simon's son, also named Simon, recovered the property in 1771, and the titles were restored by 1857. The castle was destroyed, and a new house was built in 1882.

The castle's grandeur and the beauty of the surrounding landscape make for a captivating photographic subject, while Clan Fraser of Lovat's rich history adds an extra layer of depth and meaning.

If you are considering a landscape photograph of Scotland that celebrates your connection to Clan Fraser of Lovat, this print of Beaufort Castle is a stunning immersive scene that transports you to the past.
