What is the Clan Fraser Connection to Cairnbulg Castle?

Cairnbulg Castle, located near Fraserburgh in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, has a rich and varied history. The castle was originally built in the early 14th century, but was destroyed in the Wars of Independence in 1308-1309. After being owned by the Comyns up until 1375, the castle was granted to the Earls of Ross.

However, it was during the ownership of the Frasers that Cairnbulg Castle became a significant stronghold. In 1380, the castle was rebuilt after the daughter of the 5th Earl of Ross married Sir Alexander Fraser of Cowie. In 1545, a second, round tower and other additions were made to the original main square tower.

The Frasers of Philorth, who almost bankrupted themselves in the process, sold the castle in 1613. However, the castle remained within the Fraser clan, passing through several families, including the Frasers of Durris. The castle fell into disrepair and was abandoned by 1799.

In the late Victorian period, the castle was purchased and restored by the wealthy Duthie family of Aberdeen. But, in 1934, it returned to the Fraser family after being bought by Lord Saltoun, a direct descendant of the 8th Laird. The castle was later owned by Flora Fraser, 21st Lady Saltoun, and her husband, Captain Alexander Ramsay of Mar, who was one of Queen Victoria's great-grandchildren.

If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a gift or a way to visualise your genealogical connection to Clan Fraser, this print of Cairnbulg Castle provides a beautiful immersive view that transports you to the past.
