What is the Clan Elliot Connection to Arbirlot Waterfall?

Although Clan Elliot is known as a border clan, it is widely accepted that their beginnings were further north, in Angus. It is believed that they received lands in Teviotdale during the time of Robert the Bruce.

Though documentation of the origins of Clan Elliot were mostly lost to a fire at Stobbs Castle, historians postulate that Kellie Castle in Angus and the area around Elliot Water, bearing their name, is believed to be their original territories before their move to the borders.

According to tradition, the ‘Ellots’ came from the foot of Glenshie in Angus and moved to Teviotdale during the time of Robert the Bruce. This move was considered exceptional, and an event in 1320 gives credence to the story, when lands of Liddesdale were made over to Bruce's illegitimate son, who needed to ensure his hold on the frontier by encouraging the settlement of a loyal clan like the Ellots.

Presuming the historians have got it right and the name of this river is no coincidence then we can safely say that this beautiful cascade on the Elliot Water would have been a familiar place to early Clan Elliot.

If you are considering a landscape photograph of Scotland that celebrates your connection to Clan Eliott, this print of Arbirlot Waterfall provides a stunning view that takes in the glorious beauty of the Elliot Water.
