Photographer Aly Wight took this photograph of Hermitage Castle, the great Border fortress in Liddesdale that the Douglases held from the fourteenth century. This was some of the most contested ground in Scotland, close to the English frontier, where powerful families fought for control of the crossing routes between the two kingdoms. The Douglases held Hermitage through generations of border warfare, and the castle became a symbol of their grip on the south. It passed through several hands before and after them, but it was the Douglas centuries that gave Hermitage its reputation.

If you carry the Douglas name, Hermitage is one of the places that made the clan a force on the Scottish Borders.

Sizing Information

Please note: The listed size (e.g., 16"x12") for Framed & Mounted prints refers to the glazed area, including the printed image and 2" wide mount. The frame, adding an extra 1" per side, isn't included in these dimensions. Therefore, the total product size will be larger than the dimensions given.
