Photographer Aly Wight took this photograph of Threave Castle, the tower house that Archibald the Grim, third Earl of Douglas, built on an island in the River Dee in the late fourteenth century. It became the strongest Black Douglas fortress in Galloway, and the setting for some of the most violent moments in that family's story. In 1452 a Douglas had a man murdered here whose release the king had personally requested. James II besieged Threave with cannon in 1455 and took it by force, ending the Black Douglas era.
If you carry the Douglas name, Threave is where that chapter finally closed.
