What is the Clan Stewart Connection to Craigmillar Castle?

Craigmillar Castle is a historic fortress located in Edinburgh, Scotland, with a rich history that is closely linked to the Scottish nobility. Built in the late 14th century, the castle was originally the residence of the Preston family, who were prominent Scottish nobles.

The castle's connections to the Stuarts date back to 1517 when the young James V was moved to Craigmillar for safety during a plague outbreak in Edinburgh.

Mary, Queen of Scots, is perhaps the most famous Stuart associated with Craigmillar Castle. Following an illness after the birth of her son, the future James VI, Mary arrived at Craigmillar on 20 November 1566 to convalesce. Before she left on 7 December 1566, a pact known as the "Craigmillar Bond" was made, with or without her knowledge, to dispose of her husband Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley.

During the civil war that followed Mary's abdication, known as the Marian Civil War (1568-1573), the castle served as a base for Regent Mar while besieging Edinburgh Castle, which was held by supporters of the exiled Queen Mary.

If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Stewart or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Craigmillar Castle provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
