Photographer Aly Wight took this photograph of Castle Gloom, a fortress perched above Dollar Glen in Clackmannanshire that carries one of the most atmospheric names in Scotland. Before 1489, it was a Stewart stronghold. That year it passed to the Campbells by marriage, and they petitioned Parliament to rename it Castle Campbell, giving this dramatic ruin a more respectable face. Five centuries later, the original name has outlasted the rebranding.

If you carry the Stewart name, this fortress was your clan's to command before anyone thought to change what it was called.
