Photographer Aly Wight captured this scene from the tidal shore, where a small sailing boat rests on the sand at low water and Portencross Castle rises just above the shoreline, its red-stone tower looking out over the Firth of Clyde.

Before the Wars of Scottish Independence reshaped who owned what across the country, Portencross belonged to the Rosses. Sitting on the Ayrshire coast with the Isle of Arran visible across the firth, the castle gave the family a position on one of the most-travelled sea routes in western Scotland. When Robert the Bruce secured independence after Bannockburn in 1314, Portencross passed to the Clan Boyd. Before that, this was Ross territory.

If your name is Ross, this is one of the oldest places your family held on Scotland’s western seaboard.

Please note: The listed size (e.g., 16"x12") for Framed & Mounted prints refers to the glazed area, including the printed image and 2" wide mount. The frame, adding an extra 1" per side, isn't included in these dimensions. Therefore, the total product size will be larger than the dimensions given.
