What is the Clan Ogilvy Connection to Inchdrewer Castle?
Inchdrewer Castle, near Banff, Aberdeenshire, is a tower house with a dramatic history tied to Clan Ogilvy. Originally held by the Curror family, the Ogilvies of Dunlugas acquired the castle in the sixteenth century, and it became a symbol of their influence in the region.
The Ogilvies, originating from Angus, were a prominent clan, and their acquisition of Inchdrewer Castle marked a significant expansion of their lands. The family's status was further elevated when they were made Lords Banff in 1692.
The castle's history took a dark turn in 1712 when Lord Banff was slain, and the house was torched. The story goes that he was murdered by his own servants in a robbery gone wrong, and they burned the building to hide the evidence.
Inchdrewer was later restored and passed though other families, but it's connection to Clan Ogilvy remains an essential part of its history, reflecting the clan's prominence and the turbulent times they navigated.
If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Ogilvy or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Inchdrewer Castle provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
