What is the Clan Ogilvy Connection to Airlie Castle?
Airlie Castle, located in Angus, Scotland, near the junction of the Isla and Melgund rivers, was constructed around 1432 after King James I of Scotland granted the lands to Walter Ogilvy of Lintrathen, Lord High Treasurer of Scotland. The castle, with its strategic position and protective moat, became a stronghold and chief residence of the Ogilvies.
During the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, the Ogilvies' support for King Charles I and the Royalist cause led to the castle's destruction by Archibald Campbell, 8th Earl of Argyll, in 1640. The incident is famously described in the ballad "The Bonnie Hoose o' Airlie."
The Ogilvies did not rebuild the castle, but in 1792–93, a new mansion house was constructed, incorporating parts of the castle that were still standing. This mansion, built upon the ruins, symbolises the clan's enduring connection to the site and their resilience through turbulent times in Scottish history.
If you're considering a landscape photograph of Scotland as a way to visualise your ancestral connection to Clan Ogilvy or as a gift with personal meaning, this print of Airlie Castle provides a beautiful immersive scene that transports you to the past.
