Kinlochaline Castle stands at the head of Loch Aline on the Morvern peninsula, the finger of mainland Scotland that stretches south opposite the Isle of Mull. The castle came to the Macleans of Duart after the previous occupants, the Macinneses, lost their chief and his sons in violent circumstances, and it became part of the Maclean network of strongholds along this stretch of the western seaboard. The 17th century brought repeated damage. The castle was attacked by the royalist commander Alasdair Colkitto MacDonald in 1644, damaged again by Cromwellian forces in the 1650s, and finally abandoned around 1690 following a Campbell assault during the campaign that stripped the Macleans of most of their territories. Photographer Aly Wight photographed Kinlochaline as part of the Clanscape series on Maclean heritage in Morvern.

If you carry the Maclean name, Morvern was part of your clan's territory, and this castle on the loch shore is part of that story.
